Stained Glass Courses

Would you Like to Try your Hand at this Heritage Craft?

We offer a 'Basic Experience' day to get you started and a two day 'Development' course for those who wish to take things a little further.

Working with glass is not safe as a group activity so our course options are limited to 'one to one' tuition or 'one to two'. The date of a course will be set by mutual agreement on a week day.

Course tutor

Mrs. M.J Shand B.Sc.(Hons) Cert Ed.(Distinction)

Basic Experience Day Content

The day will begin with a brief outline of the health and safety points related to lead came work followed by exercises designed to familiarise you with the techniques of glass cutting.  After looking at the purpose of cartoons, patterns and work drawings, we will put these elements into practice by selecting and cutting glass for a 'Simple Cross' or a non-religious 'Sunburst Panel'.

After lunch we will look at how to select, prepare and cut lead before learning how to solder. These techniques will be brought together to 'lead up' and solder the glass you cut/finished before lunch. The final job will be to cement your panel and set it aside to dry while you watch a demonstration covering the final polishing process. Polishing cannot be completed on your panel until it has fully dried (usually a couple of days).  At the end of the day you can take your unpolished panel home with you or leave it with us to polish and apply the fixing tape. The panel can be sent on or collected later.

Course Duration

10a.m  - 3p.m

Cost

One to One tuition - £ 100

One to two tuition - £160 (£80 per person)

All tools and materials are included in the course fee.

How to Book

Please use the Contact form to express an interest in a course. We will contact you to book a mutually convenient date. Once the date is agreed, full payment will be expected. This fee is non returnable. If you are unable to attend, you are welcome to send someone else in your place. Please provide your replacements name and contact details in advance of the Experience day.

Do I Need to Bring Anything With Me?

You will get quite dirty so must bring an old over shirt or apron to protect your clothes. Gloves and goggles will be provided.

Please dress sensibly, even under the apron or overshirt. Sensible footwear is essential - no open toed sandals when working with glass.

Please bring lunch. Tea and coffee will be provided throughout the day but our lunch break will not be long enough to travel for food.

Safety Note

Because of the hazards associated with lead, pregnant or nursing mothers are excluded from our courses.

Please inform Radiance Stained Glass of any medical conditions (such as allergies or asthma) at the point of booking any course.

Development Course

If you feel you would like further formal input before being able to develop stained glass as a personal hobby, or you just want another go, we offer a  'Development course' over 2 days. On this course we aim to help you make a panel from one of your own ideas and take you through the entire process from drawing board to completion.

The 2 days of this course needn't be consecutive and can include splitting the second day to allow cement to dry.

Development Course Fee

£150 (one to one tuition only). This includes tuition and use of necessary tools/equipment for the 2 days but not the costs of materials as these will vary depending on your design.

Development day courses may only be undertaken by those who have completed a Basic Experience day course.

Further details about this course are available upon request. Please use our Contact form.

Our Right to Cancel

In the unlikely event that a course has to be cancelled, we promise to give you as much notice as possible (via the e-mail address you give when booking). In these circumstances we will be happy to rearrange the course date or refund you the full course fee - we cannot accept responsibility for any other costs or your disappointment.
